When you choose a topic for preaching, be certain to select a topic that fits your personality, life orientation and above
all direction from God. Your listeners will notice one or all three of these factors in your presentation. Thus, it is very
necessary that you become original and stay away from imitating someone else.
When developing your thought , try be as original and be sure you master your topic. The method that I use in preaching
is the Subject/Theme Approach , which enables me to concentrate on a specific topic, and my theme enables me to go into a
specific direction. When your listeners(receivers) know which direction you are going, and when you know where you are going,
you end up doing what motivational speakers are able to accomplish; they create an atmosphere of energy, a climate of motivation
and a dimension of transformation. Thus every preacher should be a motivational speakers as a second profession.
Your sermon will be divided into six parts:
Text(s)
Subject:
Theme:
Introduction:
Specific Body Outline: Main Points
1.
11.
111.
Conclusion:
The introduction should consist of Bible Statistics, Key Words, Key Verses, the theme of the book, doctrinal, historical
and theological implications, as well as how you were inspired to preach this sermon.
The Body Outline can be very creatively designed by the preacher, but here is a basic guide:
- What Was The Message of That Day ?
- What Is The Message For Today ?
- How Can You Apply The Word Of God(Subject/Theme) In Your
Situation Today ?
1V. How Can Ones Life Be Transformed By This Word From The
Lord ? (How This Message Will Change You In Your Life
Management) ?
Last of all is the conclusion. Please avoid saying in conclusion, unless you know for certain that you are going to set
down within three to five minutes. All you do is you may end with a fitting short poem, illustration, a prayer or just repeat
the Subject/Theme.
There are four types of preaching that can be utilized by the preacher. This will depend on the situation, occasion, and
event you find yourself involved in. The four types are Impromptu, Extemporaneous, Memorization, and Manuscript. Extemporaneous
requires organized notes with specific points usually with Roman Numerals(Main Point), an Introduction and a conclusion. This
is good for most church preaching(Sunday Morning and will do good for any speaking engagement. The manuscript is good for
very professional audiences, or when you have to submit recordings, taped, CDs or you have to submit materials for publications
in professional magazines, newspapers and book. This type of preaching is detailed extemporaneous speaking which doesnt have
Roman Numerals, etc. It is just like a research project or book report. Impromptu Speaking which involves very little preparation,
few unorganized notes or no notes is good for on the spot preaching, last minute selection of a speaker, because the other
person didnt show up, etc. Memorization delivery utilizes Memorization, Manuscript and extemporaneous. This type of preaching
should not be engaged unless you have a photogenic mind. It good in Ministering in Prison, Open Air Rallies, etc.
Maintaining an organize file, a notebook, Disk Formats of your sermons
are necessary. One there is little chance of repeating yourself, it makes you organize yourself, and you are able to revise
and add new materials to your sermons. One is able to chart their spiritual as well an academic and spiritual growth. You
not only become a motivational speaker, every preacher can have the potential of becoming a professional as well as free lance
writer. This is a brief overview of Homiletics, the art and science of preaching. Hermeneutics is the science and art of interpretation
.
